Batgirl gets sidelined
Famed writer/director Joss Whedon has left the DC project. The creator of Buffy and Firefly was slated to write the upcoming Batgirl.
In an statement by Whedon, he said "It took me months to realize I really didn't have a story." He added "I'm grateful to Geoff Johns and Toby Emmerich...and so understanding when I... uh, is there a sexier word for 'failed'?" Industry sources indicated that in today's cultural environment, a male filmmaker may have faced public scrutiny tackling such an important female character.
The project was announced back in March 2017 hoping to bring a big screen companion to Wonder Woman. But sources say that after a year of trying, Whedon could not find the right formula of what a Batgirl movie should be seeing as the character is tied to the Batman mythos. Batgirl is Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner Jim Gordon, which, after a run in with the Joker left her paralyzed, became the Oracle, Batman's surveillance expert and researcher.
