D23 Expo: All the movie news
Here's a quick breakdown of what the D23 Expo had to offer in terms of upcoming Disney movies from their animated team, live action, Marvel and Star Wars films.
The Speed Test - John Lasseter presented a brief teaser which showcased a plane that looked like an SR-71 Blackbird swooping down between two zooming jets. This wasn't clear if it's connected to the Planes franchise, but Lasseter did say it was for an upcoming film from DisneyToon Studios that will focus on the history of aviation. While there was no title, there was a release date of April 12th, 2019.
Toy Story 4 - The 4th installment would no longer be directed by John Lasseter, but instead it would be directed by Josh Cooley who directed Riley's First Date (a short film with the characters from Inside Out) and wrote the screenplay for Inside Out. Toy Story 4 is set for release on June 21st, 2019.
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it-Ralph 2 - The sequel sees Ralph going from the world of video games to the broader internet. Directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston showed off a bit of a teaser which served as an in-joke of Disney princesses and acknowledgement of past concerns of their female characters. Ralph Breaks the Internet arrives November 21st, 2018.
Coco - Pixar's next big release is an intriguing mix of traditional family themes along with some beautiful and vivid imagery. The filmmakers showed off a special extended sequence which showed 12-year-old Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) steal his grandfather's guitar and magically transported to the Land of the Dead. Coco comes to theaters November 22nd, 2017.
The Incredibles 2 - Director Brad Bird was on hand to show several animation tests of updated character models to show off more expressive and realistic characters. Expect to see more from The Incredibles 2 as it arrives next year on June 15th, 2017.
A Wrinkle In Time - Disney's next live action film premiered the new trailer to a standing ovation. The project directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma) is an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name starring Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, and Reese Witherspoon. Get set for an adventure of fantasy imagery and emotion on March 9th, 2018.
Aladdin - In an unexpected turn of events, Guy Ritchie came out to give the first impressions on the upcoming live-action movie. We finally got official casting announcements that include Mena Massoud (Jack Ryan), Naomi Scott (Power Rangers), and Will Smith (Suicide Squad) taking on the Genie role. While there is no date announced, this project does seem very promising.
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi - Director Rian Johnson took the stage to introduce Daisy Ridley, Gwendoline Christie, Benicio Del Toro, and Laura Dern to talk about the movie. While they couldn't give away any new plot details, or basically any useful information at all, they did show a behind-the-scenes reel. Get ready for The Last Jedi to start breaking box office records on December 15, 2017.
Avengers: Infinity War - In what was probably the biggest announcement at D23, Kevin Feige premiered an exclusive teaser trailer that set the stage for some of the Avengers to come out for a brief appearance, including Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), and Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man). While the same team will be on hand this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, they took a brief look back at the previous 10 years and how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come about to bring forth the Infinity War against Thanos (Josh Brolin). The next appearance by Marvel will be on Saturday, July 22nd at San DIego Comic-Con where it looks to keep momentum going towards its May 4th, 2018 release date.
