Nintendo reveals online membership for Switch
It finally happened: Nintendo has made it to 2005. Nah, that's kind of cruel. I meant that Nintendo has at last given us the details of the Switch's online service, which is scheduled to launch its paid version in 2018.
While the DS, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U have had online multiplayer, the Switch is the first to offer a robust package similar to that of Xbox Live and Playstation Plus, along with a similar (but cheaper) price tag. Online play will remain free for the rest of 2017, but when the service properly launches sometime next year, there will be three price tiers:
- 1 Month Membership: $3.99
- 3 Month Membership: $7.99
- 12 Month Membership: $19.99
The company also clarified a few of the features that they previously mentioned at the Switch's launch: A phone app will be required for creating parties, adding friends, and using voice chat, the service will not be seen on the Wii U or 3DS, and a "Classic Games Collection" will be available for download as part of your membership. They confirmed Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight, and Dr. Mario as early selections.
Hopefully we'll learn even more during E3, but that's the right price for the service, certainly. Stay tuned!
